Blizzard is reportedly ‘incubating’ a StarCraft shooter again, which would be the developer’s 3rd attempt at the accursed concept

Blizzard is reportedly making a shooter in the StarCraft universe again—no, not StarCraft Ghost, which was cancelled in 2014. It’s also not Ares, which was, according to sources who spoke to Kotaku back in 2019, also canned. This one’s a third, secret thing.

Speaking with IGN’s unlocked podcast, Jason Schreier, a writer for Bloomberg and soon-to-be author of a book on Blizzard’s company culture called “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment”, shared a sneak peek at some of the info covered within.

Asking Schreier about an excerpt towards the end of the book, where it’s claimed that while most of the developers on Blizzard’s cancelled survival game were laid off, Dan Hay, who previously worked on the Far Cry series (eventually becoming an executive producer for multiple games) is now working with Blizzard on the aforementioned project. Hay joined Blizzard back in 2022.

“Most of the developers were laid off, while a few would remain w…

Intel demos Stable Diffusion running locally on its new AI-accelerated Meteor Lake CPU-

Intel has been demoing its upcoming Meteor Lake CPU at the Computex show (via PC World) and the big noise with the new chip is AI acceleration. More specifically, Meteor Lake comes with a new VPU or “Versatile Processing Unit” which apparently is powerful enough to run Stable Diffusion locally rather than in the cloud.

The VPU is essentially a dedicated inferencing accelerator included in Meteor Lake as a separate tile and designed for AI tasks like computer vision and deep learning.

AI is obviously experiencing explosive growth right now, but the likes of ChatGPT, Midjourney, and DALL-E 2 have thus far run in the cloud courtesy of huge training models. It’s hard to see any relevance of a tiny client-based hardware AI accelerator to that, right?

In fact, Intel does see a role for some level of local AI acceleration on PCs. Intel says that the huge costs of rolling out AI apps like ChatGPT to millions upon millions can be reduced by putting some of that processing l…

ChatGPT is ‘so wildly incorrect’ that an Australian whistleblower is suing it for defamation-

We all know ChatGPT gets stuff wrong. As in very wrong, and all the time. While that can be amusing, it’s less funny if ChatGPT is mistakenly identifies you as a criminal. And it’s less funny still if you were in fact the person who originally uncovered the crime in question.

Indeed, you might find it so unfunny, you decide to sue for defamation. Which is exactly what Brian Hood, a Melbourne Australia-based politician is doing.

ChatGPT apparently identified Hood, now the mayor of a local authority in northwest Melbourne, as one of the central perpetrators of the so called Securency bribery scandal. The chatbot describes how Hood pleaded guilty to the charges in 2012 and was sentenced two two and half years in prison.

And it still does if you ask ChatGPT about the scandal today.

In fact, it was Hood who actually alerted authorities to the bribery going on at a banknote printing business called Securency, which was then a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Austr…

Lego Fortnite is way bigger than we thought, and millions of people are playing the new survival mode-

Fortnite is constantly doing crossovers, so the announcement that Epic had teamed up with Lego for a new survival mode glanced off my consciousness like the announcement of a new line of Funko Pops. But we just tried the mode, which has already attracted over two million concurrent players after launching today, and it’s way bigger and more fun than we anticipated—and, of course, free.

Survival games of this type are plentiful: It’s roughly the Minecraft setup, though without voxel digging. You punch trees, get wood, build crafting stations, make tools, build better things. At night, spiders and skeletons and other monsters attack. But rarely are new survival games this refined at launch.

We’ve got quibbles, like that you can’t eat food directly from the inventory menu and creating even building surfaces is a challenge, but it’s intuitive and satisfying to run around beating up trees and building shacks so far. Combat is simple sword-and-board action with a b…
